First Day in Amsterdam

We made it! The flight wasn't too bad--I had a layover in Iceland for only a few minutes, then a short flight to Amsterdam.

I arrived a few minutes before Blair, so I met her when she came out of customs. We were very excited to see each other! And we were very happy to be greeted by this awesome sign.

We took the train to Slotterdijk (please, say that out loud for me) which is the station that is literally next door to our hostel, which is amazing. Our hostel is clean and nice, only four people in our room and our own bathroom. After hanging out for a bit, changing clothes, and getting a beer at the bar called a Hoegaarden (say that one out loud too please) we got back on the train and went to the city center--but not before getting some of these awesome fries that are sold everywhere, and smothered in ketchup, mayonnaise, and onions:

We got off the train and walked around the area, admiring the millions of canals and laughing at how I kept facing death by being oblivious to all the oncoming bike-riders. We were pretty full after those fries, but then we saw this place:

and had to go in to try some cheese. Little did we know, at least four more cheese stores just like that one were in our future, and so of course we had to stop in each one and taste each cheese three times (just to make sure). We did manage to take some good pictures though...

We ultimately stopped walking and found a place to eat called the Oude Wester Cafe Restaurant. Blair got salmon, and I got this, the Hutspot:

Apparently it's a traditional Dutch dish (it was just mashed potatoes and meat balls). It hit the spot though. We got a sweet tooth and went on a hunt for gelato, but not before finding an amazing place called the Condomerie (you can say that out loud if you feel like it... you get the point here). This store didn't allow pictures, but to give you a mental image, imagine every size, shape, color, flavor, and texture of condom known to man, triple it, and put it in a very small shop in Amsterdam. Oh, don't forget the canibas-infused condoms, too. No, I'm not kidding.

I got this amazing T-shirt (look closely at it) that I will proudly wear for the rest of my days.

Ultimately, we did find the gelato place we were looking for, called Metropolitan. After multiple taste tests of various kinds of desserts, we settled on what was easily the best thing I've ever tasted. Observe the before and after pictures:

All in all, very successful day of wandering, mooching off cheese stores, laughing at how the Dutch people don't catch all the innuendos their words have, not getting killed by natives on bikes, and being the only people in the condom shop giggling instead of seriously shopping. Time for a much deserved night's sleep.
